A year ago, I initiated and organized the first annual Rahma Gala in Springfield, VA. Hosted by Temsalet in partnership with @firsthijrah, this event was centered on bringing awareness about domestic violence to the Ethiopian Muslim community.
The evening was filled with hope - a radiant light for many who have survived domestic violence and for those who are still fighting to break through the cycle of abuse.
During National Domestic Violence Awareness month this year, I revisit this evening with fondness. It is my hope that through our continued work, we may eliminate domestic violence from our community.
It is my belief that through sharing our stories openly, we can contribute to building understanding and reducing stigma, which helps support those currently in abusive relationships and those who have survived.
My work continues on through 2020 and beyond. The time has come to bring my efforts to the supportive space on social media so that we may be able to see change occur.
There is much work to be done, but we must persevere. Through our continued efforts, I pray we can build systems of support for survivors and deconstruct the barriers to love, mercy, and mutual cooperation within a home.

Recently, I shared my anguish over the ethnic violence happening in my home country of Ethiopia.
To hear about the continuation of ethnic-based violence in Ethiopia is extremely distressing. Innocent people continue to be targeted solely on the basis of their ethnic group.
The impact of ethnic violence in our country will have repercussions for generations. The trauma these families have experienced will contribute to ongoing suffering for all Ethiopians, not just those who are are part of the minority.
As a society, we cannot permit the violence to continue.
We must stand together and build a more empathetic and inclusive society in Ethiopia, and also across the world.
It’s my hope we can create change by uniting our voices as one. I strive to responsibly and humbly contribute my voice to this cause so that ultimately peace may be achieved for all.
It is up to those in positions of privilege to advocate for those who continue to be oppressed. This is how change begins.
I am compelled to speak, out of the love of my country and its people. I believe that our country becomes stronger when we embrace those from all tribes and all ethnicities. When we unify, we have a chance at peace.

I dream of endless compassion and peace for the world.
For you. For your family. For my family. For me.
We can only achieve true peace within when there is peace surrounding us externally, as well.
Our many cultures define us and show us the beauty of our unique identities. I celebrate my own culture and enjoy traveling as much as I am able so that I can experience and appreciate the culture others have created.
Yet, simultaneously, I believe there is much to be gained when we acknowledge we are all citizens of one world.
When we work together to create peace in all nations, we all benefit. When we lead with empathy and compassion, we can build more inclusive, welcoming societies.
